We have compiled some information regarding pet food. Good quality pet food and pet food ingredients not only help your dog live a longer life, but also a healthier one. Issues such as dry skin, flaky skin, hot spots, rashes, ear infections, and stomach problems often find their root in middle grade to lower grade dog food. Not to say that ALL issues can be resolved by finding a food that is right for your dog, but many ailments can be reduced or eliminated by good quality foods. Also, just because one quality food does not help your pet, does not mean a different one won’t. Over time generations and individual pets can build up resistance or allergies to some ingredients which manifest themselves in the above mentioned skin and ear ailments. Corn and corn by products are a huge irritant and even sometimes chicken or poultry can be too. Being aware of how to read a pet food label is a key component of identifying what your are really feeding your pet. We all look for one of the “first ingredients to be meat” but really, what is a good meat? And what is all the other stuff in your pets food. Below we have identified some common foods and explained what it really is. At the bottom we have also included some web pages that we really like for you to take a look at and decide yourself what you want to feed your pet.
Beef and bone meal. Beef and bone meal is a cooked-down product of slaughterhouse waste. It’s made from the inedible by-products of beef processing considered “unfit for human consumption”. Beef and bone meal can include the entire cow… even the bones. Basically, it’s what’s left of a slaughtered animal after all the quality cuts have been removed. Whenever you see “beef and bone meal” on a dog food label you can be assured you’re looking at a product made with one of the most inferior meat ingredients you can buy. Animal fat is a generic by-product of “rendering”… the same high-temperature process used to make meat meals. Since there’s no mention of a specific animal, this stuff could come from almost anything… restaurant grease, slaughterhouse waste, diseased cattle… even euthanized pets. And to make matters even worse, this fat is preserved with BHA… a suspected cancer-causing agent. Needless to say, generic animal fat is not a quality ingredient. Poultry by-product meal… a cooked down (rendered) product of slaughterhouse waste. This stuff is made from inedible leftovers considered “unfit for human consumption”. This particular item doesn’t even specify the actual source animal. Definitely not a quality ingredient. Corn gluten is what’s left over after corn has had all its starchy carbohydrate (the good stuff) dissolved out of it. The rubbery protein residue that’s left is the gluten. Glutens are inferior (hard-to-digest) grain-based proteins missing many of the essential amino acids dogs need to sustain life. Corn used here is most likely pet-grade… and rarely of human quality. It’s usually the same kind used to create feeds for livestock and therefore frequently contaminated with insects, mites and molds. Many blame corn for chronic canine allergies. But those allergies are probably just as much the result of what’s in the corn… as the corn itself.
